Carded Season 2008/09 in Brief

Well the season has come to an end and that's the first year finished for our carded boxers.
With six wins from our last four shows.
Boxers have been competing since October 2008 for the club, traveling through out Yorkshire and even further a field to compete.

Carded Boxers Competing this season were:-
  • Jamie Tomlinson
  • C-Jay Barraclough
  • Gareth Hilton
  • Nino Nunnari
  • Aaron Leaper
  • Adam Rose
  • Carl Murray
  • Marcin K.

Where we've Competed.

We started the season at Denaby Main Minors Club-Tom Hills show. It wasn't the best start as the boxers our lads were to compete against didn't make weight and that meant the bouts were off. We stayed for the evening to watch and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the support the boxers received.

At Sharkey's at Harehills WMC in Leeds we took 4 boxers which all made weight. Not the best start though as two were stopped in the first round (Gareth's nose let him down)Our senior learnt that you cannot smoke and drink and compete and half way through the second round the towel was thrown in. Our youngest lad went the full three rounds but the decision was fair and went to the more experienced home boxer who we later discovered had been competing as a kick boxer for quite some time prior to taking up boxing instead.

Next we took two lads to Darnell Liberal Club in Sheffield, our Juniors(11)opponent didn't make weight but C-Jay showed his opponent from Halifax what we could do and won all three rounds 11-4 9-4 9-4 bringing the first win to the club.

Off to Hull next for our first Dinner Show run by Kingston ABC - a fantastic venue but we took two and brought them home again as their opponents didn't make weight.

Yorkshire Championships next in Grimethorpe, taking one junior as the second was ill it was a tense time to see if the lad made weight and had an opponent. Given a by to the next round our junior was now officially Yorkshire Champion for his age and weight and would be competing in the semi- finals in Bolton.

Whilst waiting for the semi-finals we were back at Sharkey's in Leeds taking two of our lads. Jamie spent three rounds showing his opponent what he could do and not letting him off the ropes it was tense whilst we waited for the result and shock resounded around the room when his opponent got the result. Gareth had the same experience and with everyone thoroughly dissappointed we went hoem and made the decision that this wouldn't happen again and work in the gym will intensify.

A last minute bout in Bradford at Bradford police boys show saw Gareth determined to show what he was made of. The bell went and both boxers met in the middle and then spent three rounds matching each other blow for blow in the most ferocious bout I had seen all season. When the final bell went both boxers were exhausted and the audience gave a standing ovation with raptuous applause at the sportmanship they had just witnessed. Pipped at the final bell though the win was awarded to his opponent.

Semi -Finals in Bolton saw Jamie competeing against a young man from Sunderland, however the win didn't come so Jamie will aim for National Champion next season.

In Doncaster at Highfields ABC show next - one junior and one senior competing didn't see us bring a win but saw our senior boxer win 'best senior bout of the evening' and bring another trophy for the gym.

Halifax Show held in their gym saw a change in the lads competing determined to bring some wins for the club, training hard saw the two juniors box their hearts out, Gareth the first bout of the evening for the gym winning unanimously and Nino just being out boxed in the very last round bringing a runners up trophy.

Winning didn't stop there, at YIP's Show in Skellow Aaron had his first bout and won clearly boxing a more experienced boxer Aaron's power and technique prevailed, bringing another trophy to the club.

Back at Sharky's in Leeds would our fortunes have changed, well Nino made sure they did clearly winning his bout after a three hour wait and a few nerves which didn't show at all in the ring and pacing himself he boxed his opponent against the ropes and kept him there.

Back in Hull at Kingston ABC we had finished the season and this would be our last show taking four lads, would we bring back four wins? Well not quite Jamie had his first win of the season stopping his opponent in the second round, Aaron and Nino boxed really well but didn't get the result and then last of the evening was Adam who clearly won his bout with an opponent who was only just standing at the end of the third round. Two wins out of four is still a great way to finish the season.

We now have three months to train harder, build on our technique and really make our mark next season. Can't Wait!!!
