2010

Training resumes on Tuesday 5th January 2010.
Already looking forward to an exciting 2010, January will bring School Boys Championships again and Jamie Tomlinson hoping on lifting the Yorkshire Title again with a National title in his sights. Jamie has become more aggressive in the last 2 months in his training, somehting that will benifit him in the ring this coming year.
Disapointment for Gareth Hilton in 2009 after failing to box in the ABAE Yorkshire Junior Championships due to illness, but now the club has joined CYP he has his chance for that title on January 28th, he will have a tough time there but he has come on great the last few months and has a great chance of liofting the title this season.
Aaron Leaper also makes his Championship debut at the CYP's on January 28th as a senior, this will be a very tough one for Aaron but he has the heart, skill and strength to do well!

Friday 12th Feburary will see our 2nd club show this season and one we are definatly looking forward to!

2010 will see a few new boxers joining the squad to box in 2010:
Seniors:
Danny Cranham 72kg
James Parkinson 71kg
Dean Heslop 54kg
Nathaniel Hollingwood 95kg
Sponsor is required to kit out these new lads contact Mickey if you want to help, it's not a large cost and your company name will be printed on the back of the vest.
These lads have been working hard the last few months to get fit for 2010 and box the rest of the season.

We also welcome back Nino Nunnari (16yr 58kg) afetr a 3 month lay off his fitness is almost back and will be ready to get back in the ring this coming year. Nino is working hard to get ring fit again after a short time off from the gym and cant wait to get back in for a bout.

The club has seen a lot of new members in recent months and will soon be adding more boxers to the squad when they are ready and carded.

2010 will also see a new mini squad that will be made up of members from the junior class who are to young to box yet or to raw, these sessions are aimed at getting these kids ring ready and out there in the near futre. One great kid is 10yr old Cameron Healer who had impressed all the coaches with his commitment and deication to the gym, it will be next December he turns 11 so a long wait for Cam who cant wait to get out there and is a great futre prospect for the club.

2010 is also seeing a slight kit change with regards to T shirts, all squad members have been issued new ones by the club and the standard club ones have also changed design thanks to a good contact passed on to us from Mike Gibbons (City Of Hull ABC).
The new club T's are still black but have the ABAE badge and gym name embroided on the breast, a much better/smarter look than the printed ones we currently have.

A visit to City Of Hull ABC is planed in the new year for both exsisting sqaud members and up and comings to attend for some training and sparring.

Keep checking back for updates

GYM FIT OUT

All coaches, staff and squad have been busy this week in the gym improving what we already have. We have fitted a new industrial rubber flooring to start. Moved a few thing around to get in a bigger boxing ring. We picked up and 18ft frame and ropes from the old goole boxing club but it needed alot of work. We have repainted it, new boards, new canvas, underlay, rope tape and corner pads, new turnbuckles and shackles were also fitted. Everyonw has worked non stop in there spare time this last week to get it all done before we re open this Tuesday 17th. Thank you to all that have helped this last week. It has been a long hard slog but we got it done!

First Away Shows of the Season

Mickey's Boxing Academy has got the season off to a flying start this year having boxers compete in four of the Districts Shows and even holding the first Boxing show in Selby ever over the Half term Holiday's.This week saw Aaron (17) & Ryan Leaper(14) compete at Highfields Show (Doncaster) with both taking home winners medals after two hard fought battles. Ryan's first bout for the club, proved himself by demonstrating good skills in all three rounds and deserved his medal as this was his birthday and he had still chosen to compete. Jamie Tomlinson (12)and Gareth Hilton (15)were next competing in a show at Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield (Airdales Show). Jamie was first to enter the ring and after a hard three rounds which saw him knock his opponent to the canvas and then give him a bloody nose, Jamie's hand was held high as the winner, taking another trophy back for the club. Gareth was up just before the interval, matched with a young man from Bridlington. A heavy three rounds ensued where both boxers matched each others blows but at the end of the three rounds Gareth was piped by points and had to be satisfied this time with a runners up trophy.

DEBUT SHOW A HUGE SUCCESS!

Mickeys held its debut show this Wednesday 28th October @ Snaith Sports Hall Snaith. After a long day getting set up the venue was good to go and we just awaited the boxers and spectators arrival along with the officials for the night and VIP guests.
There was 16 bouts matched for the night and a good job done as after the weigh in 15 stood for the night. We knew it would be a huge task to get the boxers out on time but we was ready for the challenge!

The 1st bout was a skills and saw Marcus Trinder (Mickeys) make his debut against Jordon Welsh (Hull Saints) a no decision bout to build confidence Marcus impressed the coaches with his skill.

Bout No5 of the night saw Jamie Tomlinson (Mickeys) up against Usman Rana (Bennys) from Nottingham.A tough bout for both boxers with Jamie losing by 1 point to a majority decision. Both these boxers were awarded Best Junior Bout of the Night by the sponsors. We then saw back in the ring Gareth Hilton (Mickeys) who has not been in the ring since April make his come back and an amazing bout against Luke Templeman (York ABC.) Gareth winning with being given it by unanimous decision by the judges.

Gareth has really impressed his coaches at the club since his last bout at the end of last season in Halifax, he has improved and improved over the last few months and it showed in this bout.

Bout No10 saw Aaron Leaper (Mickeys) in the ring again this season against Dean Donelly (Jabs), these 2 met 2 weeks ago in Leeds in a great bout blow for blow with Aaron losing by a couple of points to Donelly, there coach asked for a return on our show and we accepted, Aaron out boxed his opponent this time round boxing him on the outside and picking his shots and won by unanimous decision with one judge scoring it 25-12 to Aaron! We then had a short interval and waited while the seniors went on one by one and then bout 14 of the night saw Adam Rose (Mickeys) in the ring Vs Leon Shilitto (Hull Saints), Leon's original opponent pulled out the day before the show and he was re matched with out Adam at 1400hrs on the day a late bout for Adam who had had no time to prepare. The bout took off with Leon putting a lot of pressure on Adam and Adam finally being stopped just before the bell of the last round. Both these boxers were awarded best Senior Bout of the night by the sponsors. The final bout of the night and the one we had all been waiting for came Marcin Kowalczyk (Mickeys) Vs Mike McDonald (City Of Hull) both these lads were originally to both make there debut at our show but Mike then made his in Scunthorpe 3 weeks before winning a points decision over his opponent. This did not phase Marcin as he had been preparing for this bout for weeks. The bell rang for the 1st round and Marcin was out the corner as fast as he could stunning Mike with blow on blow, Mike threw back but Marcin kept his head moving and his feet light and fast it was hard for Mike to hit him. Both boxers returned to there corners at the end of the 1st and given advice from there coaches and once again the bell rang out for the 2nd round! Marcin flew out once again throwing blow after blow and landing a cracking shot straight on the button that saw mike hit the canvas KO'd! the crowd roared .A great ending to the show and a fantastic debut for Marcin and the club getting 4 out of 6! All the lads and the staff worked extremely hard for this show and mickey would like to congratulate and thank them all for there hard work, commitment and there dedication to the club.

We would also like to thank all the officials, boxers, clubs, sponsors, spectators and all the staff at the venue for all there support and look forward to our next one early next year! All in all a great night for all and a well organised show. Thanks you to Ian of group response and his staff who did a great job and sponsored the security, Deli Street bakery for all the food, Josh from Beckenzie Ink Tattoo Studio for the trophy sponsor, with out every ones support the show would not of happened so thank you all again and we look forward to the next. More picture to be posted soon!

First Win & Skills Bout of the Season

The boxing season got off to a great start for Mickey's ABC last week. Taking two Juniors to Locky's ABC Show in Barnsley, saw Piers Pickard (13) and Jamie Tomlinson(12) get the season off to a flying start. Piers Pickard opened the evening with the first ever skills bout for the club. This is were Piers and his opponent demonstrate their boxing skills in each of the three one and a half minute rounds without the risk of full contact and there is no winner or runner up. Piers did an excellent job and came out of the ring confident and all fired up and can't wait for the next show. Jamie Tomlinson followed straight after Piers with the first competition bout of the evening. Nervous as he entered the ring Jamie soon settled delivering Hooks to his opponents body as his opponent left himself open, into the second round Jamie settled himself in the centre of the ring and worked his opponent round the outside. Tiring, his opponent left himself open and Jamie used his longer reach to his advantage delivering jabs and Backhands into his opponents scoring area. The third round saw Jamie moving round the ring with ease side stepping his opponents shots and looking for the opening to score again. The announcement was made the judges decision was unanimous Jamie had won 11-3 8-2 9-4 bringing the first win the club this season.

Eight of the gyms Junior members class attended a full day of boxing delivered by Coaches Kerry Tomlinson and Adam Rose, to earn their Preliminary Medal and Certificate. The members where taken through all the basic punches and defences, working on the bags and in the ring and where continually assessed through out the day. All the young lads had to achieve over 55 marks in their assessment to pass however the standard was excellent with all achieving more than 70 marks and above. Coach Kerry Tomlinson said' it was an excellent day, all the young lads had a great time and picked up all the basics really quickly and I was really impressed with the final assessment results, well done lads.'This is the first step out of six levels which get progressively harder as you work through them. Carded Season 2008/09 in Brief

Well the season has come to an end and that's the first year finished for our carded boxers.
With six wins from our last four shows.
Boxers have been competing since October 2008 for the club, traveling through out Yorkshire and even further a field to compete.

Carded Boxers Competing this season were:-
  • Jamie Tomlinson
  • C-Jay Barraclough
  • Gareth Hilton
  • Nino Nunnari
  • Aaron Leaper
  • Adam Rose
  • Carl Murray
  • Marcin K.

Where we've Competed.

We started the season at Denaby Main Minors Club-Tom Hills show. It wasn't the best start as the boxers our lads were to compete against didn't make weight and that meant the bouts were off. We stayed for the evening to watch and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the support the boxers received.

At Sharkey's at Harehills WMC in Leeds we took 4 boxers which all made weight. Not the best start though as two were stopped in the first round (Gareth's nose let him down)Our senior learnt that you cannot smoke and drink and compete and half way through the second round the towel was thrown in. Our youngest lad went the full three rounds but the decision was fair and went to the more experienced home boxer who we later discovered had been competing as a kick boxer for quite some time prior to taking up boxing instead.

Next we took two lads to Darnell Liberal Club in Sheffield, our Juniors(11)opponent didn't make weight but C-Jay showed his opponent from Halifax what we could do and won all three rounds 11-4 9-4 9-4 bringing the first win to the club.

Off to Hull next for our first Dinner Show run by Kingston ABC - a fantastic venue but we took two and brought them home again as their opponents didn't make weight.

Yorkshire Championships next in Grimethorpe, taking one junior as the second was ill it was a tense time to see if the lad made weight and had an opponent. Given a by to the next round our junior was now officially Yorkshire Champion for his age and weight and would be competing in the semi- finals in Bolton.

Whilst waiting for the semi-finals we were back at Sharkey's in Leeds taking two of our lads. Jamie spent three rounds showing his opponent what he could do and not letting him off the ropes it was tense whilst we waited for the result and shock resounded around the room when his opponent got the result. Gareth had the same experience and with everyone thoroughly dissappointed we went hoem and made the decision that this wouldn't happen again and work in the gym will intensify.

A last minute bout in Bradford at Bradford police boys show saw Gareth determined to show what he was made of. The bell went and both boxers met in the middle and then spent three rounds matching each other blow for blow in the most ferocious bout I had seen all season. When the final bell went both boxers were exhausted and the audience gave a standing ovation with raptuous applause at the sportmanship they had just witnessed. Pipped at the final bell though the win was awarded to his opponent.

Semi -Finals in Bolton saw Jamie competeing against a young man from Sunderland, however the win didn't come so Jamie will aim for National Champion next season.

In Doncaster at Highfields ABC show next - one junior and one senior competing didn't see us bring a win but saw our senior boxer win 'best senior bout of the evening' and bring another trophy for the gym.

Halifax Show held in their gym saw a change in the lads competing determined to bring some wins for the club, training hard saw the two juniors box their hearts out, Gareth the first bout of the evening for the gym winning unanimously and Nino just being out boxed in the very last round bringing a runners up trophy.

Winning didn't stop there, at YIP's Show in Skellow Aaron had his first bout and won clearly boxing a more experienced boxer Aaron's power and technique prevailed, bringing another trophy to the club.

Back at Sharky's in Leeds would our fortunes have changed, well Nino made sure they did clearly winning his bout after a three hour wait and a few nerves which didn't show at all in the ring and pacing himself he boxed his opponent against the ropes and kept him there.

Back in Hull at Kingston ABC we had finished the season and this would be our last show taking four lads, would we bring back four wins? Well not quite Jamie had his first win of the season stopping his opponent in the second round, Aaron and Nino boxed really well but didn't get the result and then last of the evening was Adam who clearly won his bout with an opponent who was only just standing at the end of the third round. Two wins out of four is still a great way to finish the season.

We now have three months to train harder, build on our technique and really make our mark next season. Can't Wait!!!

1st year anniversary!

Can you belive we have been at the new gym 1 year on 1st April! It's been a great 1st year in Selby, seeing kids and adults week in week out in the gym.
It has been a lot of hard work this last year getting the gym open and ready and then still trying to improve it more and more! Great news is the new changing rooms and office are nearly complete we just need a ceiling in the office, the girls and the part in between and we are few tiles short in the lads! IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE CALL US WOULD BE NICE TO FINISH BY THE END OF OUR 1ST YEAR!!!!
This 1st year has seen us build good realasionships with local press, police, schools, colleges as well as some local businesses. We have been working with groups such as REOTAS and Social services too! The gym has made a big impact on the local community in the last year and the good news is we have just renewed the lease for a futher 2 years!!!
We have seen many lads compete this season and there a few more shows coming up before the season ends on 31st May. We have even produced a Yorkshire Champion aged just 11 this year! Jamie came to us when we opened in April and has trained so hard the last year as well as other juniors like Gareth Hilton who boxed on Friday night after a days notice! It was one of the best bouts I have seen in Yorkshire this season with the decision unfortuantly going to the other kid from Bradford but as a gym the bout made a huge impression for our gym that night!
We couldnt possibly put all on what has happened this year but it has been better than we all ever could expect and it can only go forward more and more with so many boxers now coming up to a standard where they are ready to compete. We are looking for new and more sponsorship for the gym as it helps us help the community by keeping it open so if you can help in any way please contact us. Dont forget out 1st annual awards on May 17th, if you would like to come visit us there then please let us know asap!!!
All at Mickeys ABC Selby

Championship update

C'jay Barraclough (14) was to ill to compete at the school boys this month which was a big dissapointment for him as well as the club as he had worked so hard the last few months in prepertaion.

On another note, Jamie Tomlinson (11) still went to the minors and is now Yorkshire Minors Champion for his weight 40-42 kg class. He is now through to the nationals.

Jamie was supposed to box the Midlands champion in the quarter final but no-one in the Midlans entered so he has a by to the Semi Final against North West Champion on 22nd Febuary in Bolton. Please come along and support him on the day.

Having a Yorkshire champion in our 1st season with the ABAE is great but we are hoping to produce a national champion in Jamie!

Jamie is working very hard at the gym including extra sessions out of hours to do his best on getting his hands on that title so good luck to him.
